ADVISOR'S CORNER THIS WEEK: No college for the kids?

No college for the kids? by Karen Chatman PFA, Inc.        Email : Kchatman@pfatx.net
How much money did you put away for your kid's college this year? None? Don't feel bad.  Parents of this year’s high school seniors have saved only 13% on average of the estimated $100,000 needed to pay for their child’s four-year college education. Three million seniors graduating this year will go on to four-year schools relying on public and private student loans to cover 17% of their total college expenses, according to the Fed's research. Now days, student loans are harder to get too. Add up it up, the fed estimates this year’s high school seniors could rack up a ton of debt to pay for four years of higher education, which could significantly impact their ability to begin their own savings plans after they graduate. But, what can you do? First, start a budget if you don't have one. Plug up all the money leaks in your bank account. More important, change your attitude about your financial goals. There are plenty of financial vehicles, lotions and potions to get your kid's college fund started. But you need to find the money "you don't have first." Make a commitment to put away a fist full of dollars every month without missing a beat from your "Mcdonald's/ Wendy's savings fund" and we can begin talking about the different financial strategies you can put into effect to help your kids pay for college.

THE TOOL CHEST
(Disclaimer as always: Terms of use)

A client came to me angry because she was getting charged $200 to obtain a copy of her MIB records from her "trusted advisor." I told her it was not necessary to pay a single cent because it can be obtained at no charge. Needless to say, she paid me with a smile and 2 referrals! The biggest complement a professional like me can get is a referral from you.
